YoungMinds is the UK's leading charity committed to improving the emotional well being and mental health of all children and young people up to 25, and empowering their parents and carers. Driven by their experences, YoungMinds campaigns, researches and influences policy and practice, which is why we are working together.

Both YoungMinds and ourselves agree that anyone who is willing to carry a knife and use it to intimidate others, or actually wound or kill someone, is suffering from mental health problems. Classic features of this type of dysfunctional behaviour include absence of empathy, lack of emotional regulation and poor social skills. Unless society (which includes us and all our institutions) deals with this through early intervention, including

  • - teaching parenting skills to all new parents,
  • - providing health visitors for all families to support the development of a good
  •   relationship between mother and baby,
  • - fathers taking responsibility for their children’s emotional well being,
  • - targeting intervention and supervision for all at-risk families,
  • - everyone who works with children having knowledge of how a child develops,
  • - teaching children emotional literacy coupled with comprehensive mental
  •   health support in schools,

the cost will be very high, as clearly there are too many young people who pose a threat to others and this has to change.

YoungMinds provides expert knowledge to professionals, parents and young people through its Parents Helpline (0808 802 5544), online resources, training and development, outreach work and publications.
