A 2-day guided tour of Europe's principal astronomical
observatories in the Canary Islands

/

An exceedingly rare opportunity for two people to visit Europe’s premier astronomical facilities in the Northern Hemisphere in September 2013 (or otherwise arranged). The itinerary will include a daytime visit to the Technology/Instrumentation division of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) at La Laguna on Tenerife, where instruments for space and ground-based telescopes are made and assembled, and a visit to the Tenerife observatory, with spectacular views from the top of the volcano. The next day fly to La Palma, visit the Roque de los Muchachos, the highest point on the island, and spend the night watching the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope and 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias in action, the chance to observe with your own instruments, and stay at the residencia, the 'hotel' used by professional astronomers working at the observatory (cost of meals and accommodation not included). The entire visit has been organised by the Head of the Research Division at the IAC, who will accompany the winners. Three nights half-board in Tenerife will be provided courtesy of the Principe Pas Hotel. All flight costs excluded.
